VLM pipeline to extract, clean, and georeference historical postcards, with an interactive map.

Objective

A reproducible pipeline to extract, clean, and georeference historical postcards: VLM-based OCR, metadata extraction, database querying via API as a safeguard, geocoding, interactive map. Started at the École des chartes hackathon (2026) with Mathias Garnier, Maxime Létoffé and Chahan Vidal-Gorène, continued with the CartaData junior enterprise.

• Map published by the Département: maps.vaucluse.fr.
• Round table with the archivists and IT department of the Archives de Vaucluse (Avignon, 16/02/2026).
• Portfolio and demo on Hugging Face.
• “Spatialization” workshop at the distam+ summer school (INHA, 19/06/2026): the workflow applied to the IFRI photographic collection (cards in Persian and Latin).

Next steps

• Generalize the pipeline to other archival collections.
• Presentation and demo at the ADEMEC day (02/12/2026).
